Turning big bags into big bags once more with Starlinger & Co, GmbH

GRI 102-12

To turn used big bags into big bags once more, LC Packaging and Starlinger & Co. GmbH have joined forces to develop "circular packaging" for big bags (FIBCs) made from polypropylene (PP) fabric. A unique programme that entails almost all stages of the FIBC-lifecycle, such as manufacturing, usage, recovery, washing and recycling.

With help of LC Packaging, Starlinger has simulated a closed-loop production process and produced new FIBCs with a high content of recycled polypropylene granulate flakes (rPP) that were previously LC Packaging big bags. The first tests show that fabric with a high proportion of rPP can be used to produce new FIBCs that show the same quality as FIBCs made from 100% virgin material when it comes to tensile strength, weight and safety.

Reduce the unnecessary waste of valuable raw materials

FIBCs are particularly well suited for recycling because of their large size and weight, but right now 75% of all big bags used worldwide are designed for single use. Their disposal via landfill or incineration is causing serious environmental damage with high CO2 impact. With this collaboration, we aim to end the unnecessary waste of valuable raw materials and take the first steps to create a circular solution in which big bags become big bags once more.
